The development of an innovative toolkit for learning programming with the use of the Internet of Things sensors and actuators

Project description

CodeAll is a STEM tool consisting of a chatbot teaching programming and IoT sensors. CodeAll teaches programming and helps to develop algorithmic thinking by creating a smart environment using the Internet of Things sensors. For example, it allows the users to create a car parking sensor, an intelligent refrigerator, turn on the light after clapping, create an home alarm or receive a notification when a letter is detected in the mailbox. Teaching is conducted by an intelligent assistant supported by artificial intelligence called CodeOwl. CodeOwl monitors the programming process, provides tips that help the user create new programs and suggests repetitions. CodeAll is a tool that consists of software and hardware parts. The hardware part is made up of a SmartBox, which connects wirelessly to a set of sensors and actuators. After connecting SmartBox to a computer, phone or tablet, the user just logs in to the portal where the lessons are presented. Within each of them, the user creates or modifies the code according to the tips provided by the bot. The code may be uploaded directly from the browser to the SmartBox. After starting the program, SmartBox connects to the sensors and performs programmed actions. CodeAll allows the users to acquire Junior Developer knowledge. The scope of the teaching material includes the following topics: variables, types, operators, conditional statements, functions, loops, classes and objects, code debugging. CodeAll has won many awards, including the Edulab competition for the best educational startup in Poland, was selected to Google Launchpad Start acceleration program and Swiss Kickstart acceleration program.
